The New Front de Mer

Well, I had planned on updating this blog every day whilst I was there, but slow internet caused by my network provider in the UK (Sky) not roaming to 5G meant that I could get almost nothing done online whilst I was there.

Annoying, but not a showstopper as I’ll still be posting. It just won’t be quite as live as I had intended.

The featured photo above is of the new Front de Mer promenade area. This new development and pedestrianisation work has been happening in the off-season for a couple of years now, with some preparatory works starting in the 2023/24 break, and then everything being completed between October 2024 and June 2025. And it is lovely.

This has transformed the northern end of the seafront. The main activity hub is still in and around the Place de la Mediterranée, with its open air restaurants, shopping centres, activities for the kids, and the start of the Boulevard de Cassanyes with its clubs and bars open late. As you walk further south along the coast you pass restaurants catering to all tastes, a crazy golf place, beach clubs, and you eventually end up at the kid-friendly Canet Sud with its boat-shaped climbing frame, karaoke bars, and churro shops.

But heading north from the centre used to be a lot more subdued. You would leave the Place de la Mediterranée late in the evening, walk past the night market, and… well that was it really until you reached the port. Yes there were a few restaurants, but the tables were squashed onto the pavement outside their premises and the lighting was such that it was often quite hard to see what was going on.

But with the new Front de Mer this has all changed. The northernmost section of the promenade now has a fantastic atmosphere all day and late into the night. There is room for the restaurants to spread out, the lighting enhances rather than simply illuminates, and the well designed green spaces add a vibrant sense of life to the area.

This new promenade is a triumph.
